My love hurts my children

Trauma-Informed Therapist, Trainer & Coach
I raised my voice.
And froze the moment it left me.
Not anger. Not impatience.
Just that sinking recognition.
The old weight in my chest.
The shadow I swore I wouldn’t carry here.
I corrected.
I guided.
I disciplined.
All in the name of love.
And I watched.
The pause.
The folding in.
The quick glance up, checking me.
The hesitation in the smallest movement.
And I knew.
I had been that child.
Shaped by love that arrived with rules.
Measured by obedience.
Moulded by correction.
Taught that affection must be earned.
And now I saw it in my own hands.
Every word, every action, every boundary—landing the same.
Not cruelty. Not indifference.
Love.
Tangled with fear.
Passed down without intention.
Absorbed as truth.
I hated myself in that instant.
Hated the echo.
Hated that my desire to protect, to guide, to love
could feel heavy in someone else’s chest.
And yet—I also felt awe.
Because this is what it means to be human.
To love while carrying your own scars.
To try, even when imperfect.
To notice before it shapes.
There is a choice.
Not to erase the past.
Not to be perfect.
But to pause.
To witness.
To hold without shaping.
To let them exist alongside your shadow.
For adults who grew up learning that love came with conditions.
For parents trying to navigate fear, guilt, and intention.
There is a space to begin noticing.
To watch your own impulses before they land.
To feel the echo and choose differently.
This is the space I hold.
The one where I watch my own hands,
listen to my voice,
and learn to let love land without fear.
If you feel this in your chest—if you see it in your own hands, your own voice—
step into this space with me.
Notice. Pause. Reflect.
Hold the tension.
Witness your patterns.
And learn to let love land differently—for yourself, and for the children who absorb it.
