Systemic & ancestral work

Family constellation therapy for problems that did not start with you.

Some patterns do not behave like personal problems, because they are not. They repeat with a loyalty that no amount of insight seems to touch. Constellation work is how we look at the system instead of the symptom.

What is family constellation therapy?

Family constellation therapy is a systemic method that makes the hidden structure of your family visible, so you can see which burdens are actually yours. Developed by German psychotherapist Bert Hellinger, it works from the premise that present-day difficulties often trace back to unresolved events and entanglements in the family system rather than to anything you did. I facilitate it online, one to one and in small groups.

01  ·  What it is

You are not carrying only your own life.

A family is a system, and systems have rules that nobody agreed to out loud. Someone died young and was never spoken of again. A child was lost before you were born. Money was lost, or taken, and the shame settled somewhere. Someone was excluded for marrying wrongly, believing wrongly, leaving. The family closed over the gap and carried on.

What tends to happen next is that a later member of the family, often the most sensitive one, begins to carry the unresolved feeling on the system’s behalf. Not consciously. Not by choice. It arrives as your anxiety, your inability to hold money, your loyalty to a struggle you cannot name, your sense that you have no right to a good life.

The most useful question is rarely “what is wrong with me?” It is “whose is this?”

Constellation work does something ordinary conversation cannot: it moves the family out of your head and into space, where you can look at it from the outside. In a group we use people as representatives. One to one, we use markers and your own felt sense. Either way, the structure becomes visible, and structures that become visible stop running the show quite so completely.

In my practice I never do this work in isolation. Seeing the pattern is one thing; a nervous system that has organised itself around that pattern for thirty years is another. So constellation work sits alongside inner child healing and somatic regulation, which is also the logic behind the 7W Integrative method I teach to other practitioners.

02  ·  Inside a session

What actually happens, step by step.

No incense, no mysticism, no performance. A constellation is closer to careful fieldwork than to a ritual.

  1. The intake form

Before we meet, I send you a detailed intake form. It runs to more than fifty questions and asks about deaths, losses, migrations, earlier partners, children who did not survive, anyone who was cut off. Most people cannot answer all of it. That is fine, and the blanks are information: what a family never discussed is usually what is still being carried.

  2. The conversation before the work

We talk about what is not moving, and we do it slowly. One client told me the trauma discussion before the constellation had already almost located the source of the problem. That is common. Naming the real question is most of the work.

  3. Setting up the system

We place the relevant members of your family, using representatives in a group or markers one to one. You are not asked to explain or justify. You look, and you notice what your body does as the positions change.

  4. Letting the movement happen

Something shifts, and it is usually not the thing you expected. A client working on business exhaustion heard her business say “you walked away from me” and recognised it as true. She also saw how much of the exhaustion had come from her mother. That is how these sessions tend to go: the insight arrives sideways and lands in the body rather than the argument.

  5. Resolution and healing sentences

We work toward the sentence that puts things back in order. Something like: I know it was hard for you, and it is not mine to carry. Said in the right place, at the right moment, those sentences do something that understanding alone does not.

  6. The ritual afterwards

I give you something to do after the session, because integration is where the work either holds or dissolves. One client described the follow-up ritual as the thing that helped her settle everything that had surfaced. This is the step most people skip, and the one I insist on.

03  ·  Who it helps

When the problem has outlived every explanation for it.

Constellation work earns its place when insight has stopped producing change. You already understand your childhood. You can describe your parents accurately and even kindly. You have read the books. And the same thing keeps happening.

  • Money that arrives and will not stay, with no financial explanation
  • Relationship patterns that repeat across entirely different partners
  • A pull toward struggle when life becomes easy
  • Chronic guilt with no proportionate cause
  • Grief that feels older and larger than your own losses
  • Estrangement you did not choose and cannot resolve
  • Illness or exhaustion that mirrors a parent's
  • A sense of being loyal to something you cannot name

It is also work I would ask you to wait on. If you are in acute crisis, if you are unslept and unsupported, or if you have no one around you to land with afterwards, we build stability first. Depth without a container is not courage. It is a risk I am not willing to take with you.

04  ·  Does it work?

The honest answer, including the part that is inconvenient for me.

The early research is encouraging and the overall quality of it is low. Both halves are true and you deserve both. A systematic review published in Family Process in 2021 examined twelve studies covering 568 participants. Nine of the twelve showed statistically significant improvement after the intervention, and a meta-analysis of five of them found a moderate effect on general psychopathology, with a Hedges’ g of 0.531.

The same review is explicit that the quantity and quality of evidence is low, that the studies showing no benefit tended to be the more rigorous ones, and that four studies reported minor or moderate negative effects in roughly five to eight percent of participants. Family constellation work is not recognised as an evidence-based practice by major mental health bodies, and I am not going to tell you otherwise.

SourceKonkolÿ Thege, B., Petroll, C., Rivas, C., & Scholtens, S. (2021). The Effectiveness of Family Constellation Therapy in Improving Mental Health: A Systematic Review. Family Process.

So why do I do this work. Because of what I see in the room, week after week, with people who had already tried the better-evidenced options and arrived here still stuck. Because that five to eight percent figure tells me exactly why the container, the pacing and the integration ritual matter more than the technique. And because I would rather you chose this with clear eyes than be sold it.

If what you need is a diagnosis, medication, or treatment for an acute condition, you need a psychiatrist, and I will say so. This is not that, and it does not replace it.

05  ·  One to one or group

Which format, and why it matters less than you think.

One to one, online

Most of my constellation work. We use markers and your own body as the reference point. Nothing about your family is shared with anyone else, which for many people is the difference between doing this work and postponing it indefinitely. Held on Zoom, wherever you are.

Best if the material carries shame, or the family is still around you

Facilitated group

Living representatives stand in for members of your system, and what they report is often uncannily accurate. One client described her real thoughts and emotions being portrayed so truthfully by the representatives that she could feel the resolution in her body. Groups are announced to my list when they open.

Best if you want to witness the system rather than imagine it

A single constellation session can move something significant, and often does. Where I would steer you toward ongoing one-to-one work instead is when the pattern is thirty years old and woven through your daily life. Seeing it once is not the same as living differently on a Tuesday, when your mother calls.

What people say after a constellation.

Truly truly an eye opening constellation. I felt so much resolution after the constellation. It helped me see my mom in a new light. I always thought that her criticism and punishments were learned and passed down from her own mother. I would have never imagined that, that the way my father's emotional absence impacted me as a child, would have also impacted her as his wife… This problem with isolating myself in my work, is something that I have been dealing with for YEARS, and it felt like I finally found an answer. Everything makes so much sense now.

Of all the constellations you have done for me, this was one of the most beautiful one… Today, I can truly see my son beyond his anger and his challenging behaviour. And I could also see how I was using his behaviour as a convenient escape to blame my failures. That was brutally honest and eye opening. And the most cherished part of the constellation was witnessing how much love my child holds for me… It just felt like a balm to my soul.

I came to you with a lot of challenges around money and never realised before that patterns and emotions I'm carrying from my parents is affecting the money in my life… You were able to peel so many layers which I never even knew existed… after the session, I realised I feel like I've dropped all the emotional baggage that I was carrying from my own parents which wasn't even mine to carry in the first place. I feel so much lighter after the session and this has helped a lot in boundary setting… it gives such clarity which one would take quite a while to address or realise in talk therapy.

One moment that really touched me was when Business said, 'You walked away from me. You were the one who stopped everything.' That hit me deeply because it was true. I realised how much of this exhaustion I have unconsciously carried from my mother. I also understood why I have always felt that business is 'too much work.'

All my real thoughts and emotions were so truly portrayed by the representatives. The way you guided and resolved things between me and my parents, I could feel it in my body. After the session, I felt very happy as well as truly connected to my parents as their daughter. I never felt this before.

Its been almost a week since we did stage one of the constellation… Firstly i strongly believe i had some answers to questions that have been lurking around for years… Practicing the 3 pointers x 6 times a day i don't know how to explain but makes we wake up and go to sleep with a different kind of positivity despite the adverse situation i'm in as of today.

Thanks so much Sneha for such a powerful session… I could never imagine that this issue could come from a past life and the way you integrated it with inner child was simply grace and finesse… heartfelt gratitude.

07  ·  Questions

Family constellation therapy, answered plainly.

What actually happens in a family constellation session?

We begin by talking, slowly, about what is not moving in your life. Before that, I send you a detailed intake form, because the useful material is usually in the facts nobody in the family discusses. Then we set up your family system, using representatives in a group session or markers and your own felt sense in a one to one session. You watch the structure of your family become visible outside your head. Something almost always becomes obvious that was not obvious before.

Does family constellation therapy actually work?

The honest answer is that the early evidence is encouraging and thin, and you deserve to hear both halves. A systematic review in Family Process (Konkolÿ Thege and colleagues, 2021) looked at twelve studies covering 568 participants. Nine of the twelve showed statistically significant improvement after the intervention, and a meta-analysis of five of them found a moderate effect on general psychopathology. The same review is clear that the overall quality of the evidence is low, and that four studies reported minor or moderate negative effects in a small proportion of participants, in the range of five to eight percent.

So: not a proven clinical treatment, and not nothing. I would rather you came in with an accurate picture than a marketed one. What I can speak to directly is what I see in the room, and why I always pair systemic work with nervous system regulation rather than doing it alone.

Can family constellation be done one to one, without a group?

Yes. Most of my constellation work is one to one and online. A group gives you living representatives, which can be extraordinary, but a one to one session using markers and your own body as the reference point reaches the same structure. For many people, particularly those carrying shame about the family story, doing it privately first is what makes it possible at all.

Do I need to know my family history before booking?

No. The intake form I send runs to more than fifty questions and most people cannot answer all of them. That is normal, and the gaps themselves are information. What was never spoken about in a family tends to be exactly what is still being carried. Bring what you know and we work with that.

How is this different from talk therapy or counselling?

Talk therapy works largely through understanding, and understanding matters. Systemic work goes after something else: the position you were placed in inside your family, and the loyalty that keeps you there. One client put it better than I can, saying it gave clarity that would have taken a long while to reach in talk therapy. I do not think it replaces talk therapy. I think it reaches a layer that talking around rarely does.

Is it safe if my family history includes abuse or early death?

This is exactly the material systemic work was built for, and exactly why the container matters more than the technique. We go at the pace your nervous system sets, not the pace of the story. We stop when stopping is what is needed. I do not push people into flooding in order to produce a dramatic session, and if I judge that you need clinical support in place before we do this, I will say so.

Begin here

Bring me the thing that keeps happening.

Write to me and tell me what repeats, even if you cannot explain why. We will speak first, and if family constellation therapy is not what you need, I will tell you what is.
