More than a Scroll: healing my hidden escapes

Trauma-Informed Therapist, Trainer & Coach
I picked up my phone for a quick check—just a text, an email.
But then, a reel.
Then another.
A dog trying to fit in a tiny box. A stranger making the perfect coffee. A mother packing an aesthetic lunch. A motivational clip telling me to chase my dreams.
Twenty minutes. Gone.
It didn’t feel like much. Just a small break.
But it kept happening. A few minutes here, a few there. A little escape.
And slowly, without realizing, I was always tired. Always distracted. Always scrolling.
I’d sit to work, and within minutes, my mind would wander.
I’d open a book, read the same paragraph five times, remember nothing.
I’d be in a conversation, nodding, half-listening, itching to check my phone.
At night, I’d close my eyes—but my brain kept scrolling. Replaying clips I didn’t even care about.
And the worst part?
Nothing filled the emptiness.
Then one day, my younger son called my name.
Once. Twice.
I finally looked up.
“You never listen,” he said quietly.
Then he walked away.
Something inside me cracked.
It wasn’t social media alone. It was the little ways I filled silence.
Chocolate when I was stressed.
Four episodes when I said I’d watch one.
Chips I didn’t need.
Conversations I postponed.
I realized I was avoiding stillness. Avoiding myself.
Healing didn’t start by deleting apps.
It started by sitting in the quiet. Facing the thoughts I had been running from.
Asking: What am I avoiding? Why does stillness feel unbearable?
It took weeks, months, small daily practices to reclaim my time, my energy, my life.
I didn’t stop scrolling overnight.
But I stopped needing it.
I started noticing small moments again.
Listening to my children fully.
Reading without distraction.
Breathing before reacting.
Smiling at the quiet.
It reminded me that life isn’t in the noise—it’s in the stillness we almost skip over.
And if this resonates, I want you to know—this is where I can hold space.
I guide people in 1:1 healing sessions and in my practitioner trainings.
Spaces where we slow down, notice what’s real, meet the patterns that pull us into distraction, and learn to reclaim our energy and presence.
You don’t have to do this alone.
You can choose small, quiet changes—and they ripple into a life that feels more yours.
