The wounds behind our high standards

I didn’t realise for years that the harshest voice I heard was my own.

The one that told me I should’ve done better. That I wasn’t enough. That nothing I did was ever quite right. It wasn’t just self-criticism — it was self-punishment dressed as “high standards.”

And for the longest time, I believed this voice was necessary. That it kept me disciplined, sharp, driven. But what it really kept me was small, anxious, and disconnected.

And the truth is — if you’re relentlessly critical with yourself, it spills out. Onto your partner. Your child. Your friends. Your team. The people you care about most.

Because when your inner world runs on judgment, it turns everything outside you into a reflection of that.

I saw myself nitpicking people’s words. Withholding warmth. Struggling to celebrate others. Expecting perfection because I didn’t know how to hold imperfection in myself.

And it all traced back to a home where the standards were impossible. Where love felt conditional. Where mistakes weren’t allowed. Where you were either perfect or problematic.

I carried those standards into adulthood.

And it cost me ease, connection, and softness in my relationships.

Healing changed this for me. Not in some instant, magical way. But slowly — by helping me meet the wounded child inside who only knew how to feel safe by being “perfect.” By teaching me to offer myself the compassion I was so desperate for from others.

And as I softened towards myself… I softened towards the world. I stopped expecting flawlessness. Stopped measuring worth through productivity. Stopped holding people to standards I never signed them up for.

And I realised — we don’t build meaningful connections through perfection. We build them through vulnerability, forgiveness, and presence.

If you find yourself being overly critical — both with yourself and others — you’re not broken. You’re carrying an old survival pattern.

And you don’t have to keep it.

This is the work I hold space for. In my 12/24 session private 1:1 healing journeys — I help you: ✨ Untangle where these impossible standards began ✨ Meet the parts of you terrified to be seen as “not enough” ✨ Rewrite the way you hold yourself and others
