Reclaiming Myself- Beyond the Name

Sneha Maheshwri

Trauma-Informed Therapist, Trainer & Coach

I didn’t disappear from social media because I was resting.

I disappeared because I was grieving a death no one else could see.

My divorce didn’t shatter me.

The request to change my name did.

It’s strange.

A relationship can die quietly, slowly, over years…

and you survive it.

But the moment someone asks you to let go of the name you’ve built your entire life around —

that’s when everything collapses.

When I was told I had to leave behind Sneha Kaushal Totla,

it felt like being asked to bury a version of myself I wasn’t ready to cremate.

A name I had built my world around.

And suddenly I wasn’t grieving the relationship anymore.

I was grieving the collapse of everything that had held me together —

my home,

my life structure,

my sense of belonging,

my place in the world,

my identity as someone’s wife,

and the name that once made sense.

It was a strange kind of death…

the death of someone who was still breathing.

The grief wasn’t about the marriage — that had already died its million tiny deaths.

The grief was about identity.

About the woman I had been.

The story I had lived inside.

The self I thought I was.

I had to face a question that tore through every layer of me, and it still echoes:

Who am I without this name?

Who am I without my identity?

Who am I without the self I built my life around?

Names are not labels.

They are shields.

They are armor we wear to be seen the way we want to be seen.

They are the scaffolding for our lives, our worth, our dreams.

Lose that, and suddenly the floor disappears beneath you.

And in that void, I met the raw, unmasked me.

No title.

No story.

No shield.

Just a body, a chest, a heart trembling in its own gravity.

It was terrifying.

And yet, in the terror, something whispered:

You are still here. Even without the name. Even without the identity. Even without the story.

So today, I step into a new name —

not as a replacement,

but as an emergence:

I am Sneha Maheshwri.

A woman who has died to an old self

so she could be born fully into herself.

The spaces I create now reflect this truth.

The work I do now reflects this depth.

The writing I share now reflects this reclamation.

If you want to witness or walk this raw, tender, unflinching journey with me,

you can now subscribe to my writings and reflections on Substack.

This is not just a name change.

It’s the moment you stand before the mirror of your own life and finally ask:

Who am I… without the mask?

Without the name?

Without the identity I thought defined me?

And when you dare to answer that…

everything begins again.
